Since prices are continually rising for classic bags such as the Chanel Flaps, Lady Dior, Celine Luggage Totes and Louis Vuitton bags (ie. the entire line has gone up) its hard to know where to get your bang for your buck without spending $3,500 - $4,000 USD.
Reviewing the current selection out there it appears that the best value designer brands that will bring you under that $2,000 USD mark are from:
- Saint Laurent (ie. Monogramme, CHYC, Small Sac Du Jour sizes)
- Givenchy (ie. Antigona, Pandora, Lucrezia); and
- Fendi (ie. Small 2 Jours totes).
These brands can still be typically found online on sale (ie. Bluefly, Gilt, Rue La La) and are definitely of better value as the bags have the 'IT' style factor, the brand recognition and the utmost quality. The make and construction of these bags are typically impeccable with a large selection of great investment pieces that can withstand the test of time. Their prices are still relatively stable and have not increased as much in the last few years.
For example, the Sac du Jour line for Saint Laurent has a very similar exterior calfskin leather to the Celine non-pebbled luggages. In addition, the Givenchy bags have a very durable and supple leathers that are sometimes not comparable to any other bags, for example in the classic Nightingale bags. Fendi is also a natural alternative to Chanel as Karl Lagerfeld designs for the brand and has produced a number of heavy hitters with the 2jours and 3jours lines.
Here are some of the examples of bags below $2,000 USD that are available on-line:
