Introducing the guide to the classic Hermes Birkin Bag. This is considered the most coveted bag made by Hermes and is a significant investment to buy one. In 1981, Hermes’ Jean-Louis Dumas was in the same flight with the British actress and singer Jane Birkin when he noticed that Jane’s bag was packed. She explained that she could not find a weekender bag that suited her. In 1984, he then created the Birkin bag, and named it after the actress.
Compared to the Hermes Kelly Bag, the Birkin Bag takes longer to create as it requires up to 48 hours to produce by hand. It has double handles with a front flap and includes lock keys that are enclosed in a leather “clochette”. It has interior leather lining and one zipped pocket. Hardwares offered include gold and palladium. The metal lock may be customized and can be covered in leather or even encrusted with diamonds.

The first size of the Birkin was the 40cm. In 2004, the 25cm was created, and was typically used as an evening bag. The 45cm Birkin is used for traveling as it has longer straps. It has a wide variety of leather to choose from including: box calf, chamonix, togo, clemence, veau swift, epsom and fjord (and more not listed). It is also available in exotic materials such as ostrich, crocodile, alligator and lizard and non-leather like etoile, canvas, vibrato and crinoline.
